Veterinary and paperwork
The clinical side is usually the smaller share. It covers the microchip, the rabies vaccination and any boosters, a titer blood draw plus the approved laboratory’s own fee, parasite treatments, and the health certificate appointment. Where a government endorsement is required, the animal-health authority charges separately and prices differ by country and by how many certificates are signed at once. Fees rise if your regular vet is not government-accredited and you need a second clinic to sign, or if a certificate has to be reissued because the flight moved.
What the airline charges
Three products carry three price structures. A cabin pet is billed as a flat fee per flight segment and per direction, so a connection can double it. Checked hold travel is normally a flat fee too, usually higher than cabin. Manifest cargo is priced on chargeable weight, meaning the greater of the actual weight of animal plus crate and the volumetric weight of the crate — which is why a large, light dog in a big kennel can cost more than the numbers on the scale suggest. Fuel and handling surcharges are added on top.
Equipment and ground legs
An IATA-compliant crate for a large dog is a meaningful purchase, and airlines that insist on extra ventilation panels or a size upgrade for snub-nosed breeds push it higher. Budget for bolts, dishes, absorbent bedding and labels. Then add the journeys either side of the flight: a taxi will rarely take a giant kennel, so a van hire or a pet taxi is often needed to reach the cargo terminal, and the same applies on arrival at a facility that may sit some distance from the passenger airport.
Third parties and quarantine
Where the route needs an agent, expect fees for booking, document handling and customs clearance, sometimes as separate lines. Import customs clearance may require a licensed broker even when no duty is payable. Quarantine is the largest single item when it applies: Australia requires at least 10 days at its government facility, New Zealand a comparable minimum, and Japan up to 180 days if the pre-travel steps were not completed correctly. Daily rates are published by the destination authority and change, so check the current figures rather than an old quote.
Building a budget that holds
Totals range from modest for a cat flying in the cabin within Europe to several thousand for a large dog moving to a quarantine destination, and quoting a single number for either would be misleading. Price your own route by collecting three itemised written quotes and listing every stage separately. Then add a contingency of roughly a fifth: reissued certificates, a rebooked flight when cargo space disappears, an extra boarding night, or a repeat titer test after a low result are all normal rather than exceptional.
